Safe Formula Preparation: Step by Step
Safe preparation matters more than most new parents realize. Contamination and incorrect dilution are the two biggest risks to watch for.
Water Safety
If you use tap water, check whether your local supply is fluoridated and whether it is safe to use for infant formula. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends using water from a safe source and, for very young or at-risk infants, boiling water and allowing it to cool before mixing. If you use a water filter, ensure it is designed to remove harmful bacteria and contaminants.
Measuring Correctly
Always follow the manufacturer's instructions precisely. Under-diluting formula (adding too much powder) can overload your baby's kidneys with excess nutrients. Keep your baby upright for 15 to 20 minutes after feeding. If gassiness is persistent, speak to your pediatrician about whether a different formula or a different bottle with an anti-colic design might help.
Spitting Up
Spitting up is very common in the early months because the lower esophageal sphincter is still maturing. As long as your baby is gaining weight well and is not in distress, frequent small spit-ups are generally normal.
